Why it works
Italian suede construction

We source our suede exclusively from Italian tanneries that have perfected calfskin treatment over generations. The nap is brushed to a consistent texture that resists scuffing while maintaining the soft hand-feel suede devotees expect.

Fit & sizing guidance

The Retro Slip-On runs true to Common Projects sizing, which aligns with standard US measurements. We manufacture in whole sizes only — if you typically wear a half size, we recommend sizing down for a snug fit or up if you prefer more room in the toe box.

The elastic side goring stretches approximately 15mm to accommodate different instep heights, so the slip-on entry remains smooth even with a closer fit. The padded collar sits 8mm higher than our low-top lace-up styles, providing additional ankle support without the bulk of a mid-top silhouette.

Styling versatility

The Retro silhouette bridges the gap between our court-inspired low-tops and a traditional loafer, making it equally at home with tailored trousers or selvedge denim. The monochromatic colorways we offer — grey, tan, navy, and black — were selected specifically to complement both casual and smart-casual wardrobes.

Because the design eliminates laces and hardware, your eye reads the shoe as a single uninterrupted form. The same steel-toed durability found in our men’s sneaker collection carries through to the Retro’s rubber cupsole, which we’ve kept deliberately low-profile to maintain the sleek proportions.

Worth every penny
I’ve owned three pairs of Common Projects over the years and these are my favorites. The suede is buttery soft right out of the box, and the slip-on design means I actually reach for them more often than my Achilles lows. They look just as good with chinos as they do with jeans.

Perfect travel shoe
I bought these specifically for a two-week trip to Europe, and they were the only shoes I packed besides sandals. No blisters, no discomfort even after full days of walking. The slip-on convenience at airport security was a bonus I hadn’t considered.

Finally found my go-to sneaker
I’ve been searching for a minimalist sneaker that works with my office-casual wardrobe, and these check every box. The grey suede is more versatile than I expected — it somehow reads as more refined than white leather without feeling dressy.

Exceptional quality, size down
The craftsmanship is immediately apparent when you hold these. My only note is that they run slightly large — I’m usually a 43 in European sizing and the 42 fits perfectly. The elastic is strong enough to feel secure but stretches easily when putting them on.

Best suede sneaker I’ve owned
I was hesitant about suede because of maintenance concerns, but following the care instructions has been simple. A quick brush after each wear keeps them looking new. The cushioned footbed makes these comfortable enough for all-day wear, which I wasn’t expecting from such a minimal design.

Clean design that lasts
I’ve had my tan pair for eight months now and they’ve held up beautifully. The suede has developed a nice patina without looking worn, and the sole shows minimal wear despite regular use. These feel like an investment piece, not a seasonal trend.

Retro Slip-On questions

The Retro Slip-On uses the same last as our Achilles Low, so your Common Projects size will be consistent across both styles. Both run true to US sizing in whole sizes only.

The main fit difference is the slip-on construction — without laces to adjust tension, the elastic goring determines how snugly the shoe hugs your instep. If you prefer a looser fit in lace-up sneakers, consider sizing up in the Retro.

We don’t recommend wearing suede styles in wet conditions. While a suede protector spray provides some water resistance against light mist, sustained exposure to rain will darken the suede and potentially damage the nap.

For unpredictable weather, our leather Retro Low offers the same silhouette with weather-resistant uppers. If your suede pair does get wet, stuff them with newspaper and air-dry them slowly — never use direct heat.

Each pair ships in our signature Common Projects box with dust bags for both shoes. We include a product care card with specific suede maintenance guidance and information about our atelier repair services.

Shoe trees are sold separately but highly recommended for maintaining the shape of slip-on styles, which can collapse at the throat without proper support between wears.

For surface dirt and dust, use a suede brush to gently lift the nap, brushing in one direction. For scuffs or deeper marks, a suede eraser will remove most blemishes without damaging the texture.

Avoid water-based cleaners entirely. If a stain persists after brushing and erasing, we recommend professional suede cleaning rather than attempting home remedies that might discolor or stiffen the calfskin.

The elastic side panels are engineered to maintain tension over the lifetime of the shoe. We use a reinforced elastic that’s stitched at both the upper and lower attachment points, preventing the sagging that occurs with cheaper slip-on constructions.

If the elastic does lose tension after several years of daily wear, our atelier repair service can replace the goring while preserving the original suede upper.

Yes, all Common Projects footwear is hand-crafted in our Italian workshop in the Marche region. The same artisans who construct our lace-up styles also build the Retro collection, using identical construction techniques and quality standards.

The Retro Slip-On takes slightly longer to produce than lace-up models because the elastic goring requires precise hand-stitching to ensure even tension across both panels. Each pair is inspected before leaving the factory.

The Retro Slip-On features a smooth suede or leather upper with clean, uninterrupted lines and tonal elastic goring. The Slip-On Perforated uses full-grain leather with through-punched ventilation holes across the vamp and quarters, offering increased breathability for warmer months.

Both share the same Margom cupsole and cushioned footbed, so the choice comes down to aesthetic preference and seasonal needs. The perforated version is better suited to spring and summer, while the Retro works year-round with appropriate weather protection.
