Chelsea Boots Black Leather — Common Projects
Our Common Projects Chelsea boots in black leather represent minimalist footwear at its most refined. Each pair is handcrafted in Italy from premium full-grain calfskin, tumbled and treated to develop a natural patina over time.

We source the calfskin for our common project chelsea from a single tannery in Tuscany, selected for consistent grain and natural elasticity. The leather arrives pre-tumbled but unfinished, allowing our workshop in Marche to hand-burnish each boot individually.

Fit and sizing
These Chelsea boots run true to Common Projects sizing, which follows European measurements. If you wear a US 10 in our Achilles sneakers, order a 43 in this boot — the last is identical through the midfoot and heel.
The elastic goring stretches approximately one centimeter when new and settles after the first few wears. We recommend trying the boot with the sock weight you plan to wear most often; a mid-weight merino sock typically provides the best balance between fit and comfort. The toe box is slightly more generous than our low-top styles, accommodating a thicker insole without crowding your toes during all-day wear.

Sole construction and traction
We use a Margom rubber cupsole bonded to a stacked leather midsole, the same platform found on our combat boots. The rubber layer measures four millimeters at the forefoot and six at the heel, providing cushion without adding bulk.
The tread pattern is minimal — a series of shallow diamond cuts that grip smooth surfaces without collecting debris. This sole performs well on pavement, tile, and sealed wood but lacks the deep lugs needed for wet trails or gravel. We’ve found it strikes the right balance for a boot intended primarily for urban environments where silent footfall and clean lines matter as much as grip.

Chelsea Boot questions
The boot should feel snug but not tight across the instep and midfoot when new, with about a thumbnail’s width of space in front of your longest toe. The elastic goring will feel firm initially but stretches slightly during the first week of wear. If you can slide the boot on and off without using the pull tab, it’s too large.
The leather upper handles light rain and mist without issue, though we recommend applying a water-repellent spray before the first wear. The Margom rubber sole provides adequate grip on wet pavement. Avoid prolonged exposure to standing water or heavy rain, as the leather lining can absorb moisture and require extended drying time.
The leather version uses smooth full-grain calfskin with a hand-burnished finish that develops patina over time, while the suede version features napped leather with a matte texture that requires brushing to maintain. Both share the same last, sole construction, and elastic goring. The leather model is slightly more formal and easier to clean.
The Margom rubber outsole typically lasts twelve to eighteen months with daily wear, depending on walking surfaces and your gait. The stacked leather midsole above it can last significantly longer. When the rubber wears through, a cobbler can resole the boot using a replacement Margom unit, preserving the original upper and midsole.
These Chelsea boots have a single-layer leather lining with no additional insulation, making them suitable for mild to moderate temperatures. In cold weather below freezing, we recommend wearing a merino wool sock for warmth. The unlined design allows for better breathability during spring and fall.
The gold-foil serial number stamped on the heel counter identifies the specific production batch and date of manufacture. It’s a design signature we apply to all our footwear but serves no functional purpose beyond authentication and quality tracking in our workshop records.
Yes, a qualified cobbler can replace the Margom rubber outsole while preserving the stacked leather midsole and upper. The construction method we use allows for resoling without compromising the boot’s structure. Many customers have resoled their pairs once or twice over several years of wear.
